Great Western Wine highlights expanded premium Italian wine portfolio at the Definitive Italian Tasting
Jun 13, 2003, 10:09

Great Western Wine will unveil a selection of its top quality exclusive agencies at the Definitive Italian Tasting on Thursday 3rd July demonstrating that it is now a serious player in the UK market for premium Italian wine.

The company has a reputation for offering customers 'a world of difference' from the big brands, co-operative and negociant wines supplied by other wholesalers and the supermarkets. Initially this reputation was founded on their success in sourcing outstanding 'boutique' wines from France and the New World. However, over the last four years Managing Director Philip Addis and his team of buyers have scoured the length of Italy to build a comprehensive portfolio of wines at different price points, in response to demand from their growing list of on trade customers, independent retailers and private clients.

Wines from seven different Italian producers will be highlighted at the July tasting. They include three Tuscan estates: Terrabianca - producers of Campaccio (one of the top 10 on-trade brands in the USA); Podere Il Paradiso - the newest addition to Great Western Wine's portfolio that offers top quality entry level Chianti; and Corte Pavone. This estate based in Montalcino produces larger volumes of Brunello and was recently acquired by the Loacker family. The introduction of new winemaking techniques and a new cellar enabling gravity handling is likely to raise the quality of the wines even further over the next few years.

Also from the Loacker stable is the estate of Sware de Sancta Justina in Alto Adige whose vineyards date back to the Middle Ages. Since 1979 Rainer Loacker has farmed the estate organically to produce wines of intense purity and finesse.

The two Piedmont estates on the Great Western Wine list, Negro Angelo e Figli and Molino, produce some of the best wines available from this famous region. Giovanni Negro and his two sons – one of whom honed his winemaking skills working with Angelo Gaja – are renowned for the quality of their Barbera and also produce excellent white wines from the little known grape variety, 'Arneis'. The Barbaresco from Azienda Agricola Molino is also attracting international interest and came top last year in a New York.

Wines will also be on taste from La Tenuta Beltrame in Friuli, a small 40 hectare estate near the medieval city of Palmanova that produces exciting red and white wines each year from local and international grape varieties at their state-of-the-art winery.

Philip Addis comments, "Our initial focus was been to source wines from the most famous premium wine regions of Italy – to get Tuscany and Piedmont 'right' and then broaden the portfolio to include wines from some of the less well known regions. We now have some fantastic estates working with us and I'm delighted to say that our list of Italian agencies is continuing to grow".
