‘William Teacher Confirms Smoking Ban & Refusal
Nov 15, 2005, 16:31

‘Whisky entrepreneur and social pioneer William Teacher has confirmed that he is to ban smoking in his Dram shops and has advised staff not to serve customers who appear to be in a befuddled state’.

These socially enlightened words date back 140 years when burgeoning Whisky baron William Teacher was running a series of Dram Shops in Glasgow.  Yet the words have real resonance with current issues such as ‘binge’ drinking and the imminent ban on smoking in public places.

Captured in what is considered to be one of the most complete accounts of any of Scotland’s Whisky companies, these words form part of a new book by renowned whisky writer and historian, Helen Arthur.  Published this week, ‘A Teacher’s Tale, 175 years of Scotch Whisky through the eyes of Teacher’s® Highland Cream’ celebrates the 175th anniversary of Teacher’s Whisky, capturing both the historical and contemporary relevance of this world famous brand.

Charting the history of Teacher’s across nineteenth and twentieth century Scotland, ‘A Teacher’s Tale’ offers a fascinating insight into the development of what has become one of the UK’s largest spirit brands.  With particular emphasis placed on marketing and advertising, the book dispels the myth that celebrity endorsement is a phenomenon of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.  In the early seventies Teacher’s was using the celebrities such as Sammy Davis Junior, David Frost and Groucho Marx to promote its full and powerful character.

The book forms part of the brand’s 175th anniversary celebrations which include a new advertising campaign parodying a number of promotional tools such as “Buy One, Get One Free” and “Free Prize Draws.” The advertising communicates the high quality and traditional values of Teacher’s in a straightforward and honest manner using the strapline ‘Scotch. The way we like it.’

‘A Teacher’s Tale’ shows the development of Teacher’s into a brand of real significance in both the UK whisky market, where it sells over seven million bottles* every year, and in the mind of the UK consumer, where it stands for uncompromising quality. Something of which William M Teacher would surely have approved.

‘A Teacher’s Tale’ will be available through good book shops priced £25.00(RRP)
