Cockburn's release LBV 2000
Sep 12, 2005, 22:02

The team at Cockburn’s will be releasing their 2000 Late Bottled Vintage Port, which will be in store from late- September 2005 with an RRP of £10.14.

Cockburn’s Viticultural Director Miguel Côrte-Real comments, “2000 proved to be an outstanding year for growing top quality grapes and was declared as a vintage by most of the major Port Houses.  The winter was mild and dry, although spring rain at flowering time caused some reduction of fruiting and hence production. The summer was hot and dry, giving a regular and uniform grape maturation until mid-August, when some light rain helped the maturation process to finish to perfection.”

The high percentage (40%) of Touriga Nacional, from Cockburn’s own Quintas in Canais and Tua, has produced a wine that is full and fruity on the nose with concentrated blackcurrant notes. It is slightly drier in style, as is characteristic of all Cockburn’s® Ports, and has a complex lengthy finish. “This is a fantastic wine,” continues Côrte-Real, “ Full-bodied and fruity as all LBV wines should be, but with the classic Cockburn’s® ‘Grip’ which gives a real structure and balanced finish to the wine.”

Following on from the success of Cockburn’s® LBV 1997, Cockburn’s® LBV 1998 and Cockburn’s LBV 1999, Cockburn’s® LBV 2000 is a great addition to the Cockburn’s premium portfolio. Recently restyled by Brandhouse WTS, the LBV 2000 now shares the famous ‘Coronet’ bottle with the rest of the core Cockburn’s range, an iconic shape that was described as ‘quirky’ by consumers, and a simple clear white label, reinforcing the premium qualities of the wine. As well as a new look, Cockburn’s® LBV 2000 is also available with a stylish gift box, maximizing the gift potential of this wine.

Jo Smith, Brand Manager for Cockburn’s, comments, “ The consumer research*, which we carried out during the repackaging project, showed that LBV drinkers were especially impressed with the new look Cockburn’s® LBV.  They liked the clarity and aesthetic appeal of the new packaging and felt it was more contemporary.”

Cockburn’s is also working to improve consumer understanding of the port category and the different port styles and has produced a ‘Cockburn’s® Port Style Guide’ neck collar which will be present on Cockburn’s® LBV 2000, Cockburn’s® Special Reserve® and Cockburn’s® Fine Ruby. The mini booklet contains details on the major port styles as well as a money off voucher for the next purchase of Cockburn’s® LBV 2000.

“We’ve been instrumental, especially through Cockburn’s® Special Reserve®, in driving volume and value in the Port category over recent years.” continued Smith. “The Cockburn’s® Port Style Guide will help consumers better understand Port, encourage them to experiment with different styles and widen their view of Port.”
