Allied Domecq unveils rare Glendronach
Mar 17, 2005, 12:54

Six months after announcing a multi million pound investment behind its single malt whisky distilleries*1, drinks group Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine Ltd, has released a rare and unique expression of its Glendronach Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Matured in ex-Spanish Oloroso sherry butts since 1971, Glendronach 33 Year Old is a
super-premium Glendronach of the highest quality.  Rich and deep in colour, the sherry butts have imparted a distinctly sweet and luscious flavour to the whisky, which serves to compliment the inherent fruitiness that is the hallmark of this outstanding distillery.

The Glendronach 33 Year Old will be available in premium duty free outlets globally and selected specialists in domestic markets in Europe, Asia and the USA.

Designed to reflect both its maturity and rarity, Glendronach 33 Year Old is presented in the traditional Glendronach bottle within a premium hand crafted, wooden, front opening canister.  Retailing for an estimated £200-£220, per bottle the Glendronach 33 Year Old will appeal to malt connoisseurs seeking the ultimate in sherry matured single malt whisky drinking.

Michael Cockram, Malt Brands Director for Allied Domecq said, “This launch of Glendronach 33 Year Old is the first in a series of initiatives designed to open up the precious malt whisky assets that lie within the Allied Domecq group.  At the forefront of this programme, The Glendronach 33 Year Old is a clear demonstration of both the high quality of those assets and our desire to reinforce the super-premium nature of our malt whisky offering”.

Notes to Editors:

  1. Glendronach 33 Year Old – Tasting notes

Colour Flamed mahogany

Nose               At bottle strength the immediate aroma is of rich fruitcake and juicy sultanas and is very easy to nose. With a splash of water an intense thick sherried sweetness evolves and is complimented with the candied peel, honey flower nectar and intense sweetness with just a trace of spicy cinnamon.

Palate              After the initial thick demerara sugar sweetness there is a slight tang of liquorice root and walnuts.

Body               Powerful, full bodied and rich

Finish              Long and nutty with a very slight dry finish

The richness and thickness of this bottling of Glendronach is possibly the ultimate example of 33 years of maturation in Oloroso sherry casks. We recommend that it would be is best savoured either at the strength as it comes from the bottle or with just a splash of water.

  1. Located in the hills of Aberdeenshire, Glendronach is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, having been licensed since 1826.  It also remains the only distillery in Scotland using the traditional direct-heat, coal-fired stills to undertake distillation.
