Cockburn's
Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine (UK) Ltd releases limited edition Cockburn’s Treaty Port
Oct 24, 2003, 12:29

Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine (UK) Ltd (ADUK) and Cockburn Smithes - the UK’s favourite port House - have released Cockburn’s Treaty, an exclusive ‘limited edition’ premium packaged ruby port for Morrisons this Christmas.

Jim Reader, General Manager at Cockburn Smithes, comments, “Cockburn’s Treaty is a special blend made from our own plantations in the Vilariça valley where Cockburn's were pioneers of advanced Douro viticulture in the early 1980s. Twenty years’ unique experience involving block planting of selected clones of the classic Douro varieties on carefully selected rootstock, has enabled us to produce a wine to match exactly our concept of a ‘celebration’ port. More than three quarters of the blend is Touriga Nacional, complemented by small volumes of Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.   The striking ruby hues are witness to an intense berry nose, complemented by ripe plums on the long, well-structured palate.  This is a wine to warm to."

Cockburn’s Treaty Port is named after the Treaty of Methuen that was signed by Britain and Portugal 300 years ago in 1703.  This historic document paved the way for the enormous expansion of the port trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, filling the void left by the absence of French wines in Britain when the two countries were fighting on opposite sides during the Spanish War of Succession.

Cockburn’s Treaty Port has been created to fulfil a specific consumer and customer need,” says Rosie Kent, Senior Brand Manager for Cockburn’s at ADUK.   “With its modern, stylish gift packaging and velvety smooth and fruity palate it appeals to consumers who enjoy fruit-driven wines and are looking to buy port as a gift or for a special occasion.”
