Domecq sherry brand, Fino La Ina, has been hailed as the best Spanish wine of the last decade by highly respected Spanish wine critic, José Penin, beating super premium wine Vega Sicilia 'Unico' into second place and swiftly followed by Domecq Venerable sherry in third.
The appraisal, which was featured in 'Sibaritas' Magazine, was part of a report dedicated to Spanish Bodegas whose wines have obtained mean scores equal to 90 or more over the last 10 years in specialised magazines and wine guides. Bodegas Domecq itself is also named in the report as the second best bodega in Spain.
Penin attributed the success of Fino La Ina sherry – known for its bone dry, crisp and aromatic flavours - to the wine's "special biological character and its deepness" from the careful ageing of the wine through the traditional 'Solera' system.
Venerable is one of the rarest sherries in the Domecq portfolio, made only from top quality Pedro Ximenez grapes and aged for more than 30 years. Penin is particularly taken by "its dense opaqueness and that rare mixture of sweetness and the hint of oloroso [which] prevent it from being too sweet".
"We're delighted that the excellent quality of these two premium Domecq sherries has been officially recognised in this way," says Gareth Brown, Brand Manager for Sherries at Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine (UK) Ltd (ADUK). "La Ina has enjoyed a cult following in the UK amongst sherry connoisseurs for some time, but Venerable is currently available only in very small quantities on allocation and we would advise specialist retailers to contact us quickly if they would like to capitalise on the brand's increasing reputation."
Fino La Ina (RRP of £7.14) and Venerable (RRP £29.99) are both available through John Harvey & Sons or ADUK on 01403 222600.

Bodegas Domecq
The history of DOMECQ began in 1730, when an enterprising young French aristocrat called Pedro Domecq Lembeye left London for Jerez to become a partner in a sherry business. Pedro Domecq laid the foundations of a wine company which eventually became a supplier to the Royal Household. The bodega steadily grew and acquired new vineyards and buildings. The DOMECQ vineyards are in the Jerez Superior area, mainly in the historic district of Macharnudo Alto.
Four of the Domecq wines – Venerable, Sibarita, Amontillado 51-1a and Capuchino – were granted the official qualification VORS (age over 30 years) in 2001 by the Sherry Denomination of Origin.
