Famed for its esoteric uncompromising peat smoke reek and huge flavours, Laphroaig Cask Strength has been awarded the ultimate Whisky accolade - The best Scotch Single Malt Whisky in the World for 2005!
That’s the opinion of over 100 of the world’s best known and respected Whisky writers, tasters and drinkers who have ‘blind’ tasted their way through some 500 different Whiskies, covering three continents and five different Whisky producing nations.
Conducted by ‘Whisky Magazine’ the only authoritative consumer magazine devoted to celebrating the Whisky industry around the world, the mammoth undertaking represents the magazine’s bi-annual search for the Best of The Best Whiskies in the world. Laphroaig Cask Strength competed against some of the world’s outstanding single malt brands to win the Best Scottish Single Malt category.
Dominic Roskrow, Editor of Whisky Magazine comments "The standard in all categories was extremely high this year and none more so than in the Islay and islands category. To reach the last stages from an original field of about 500 whiskies is an achievement, so to win is very special indeed. But the Laphroaig Cask strength is a worthy winner. It is an outstanding whisky in the best traditions of this wonderful distillery."
Not for the faint hearted, Laphroaig Cask Strength is a full on, full strength, straight from the warehouse sort of dram, that is both powerful and seductive. Produced in small quantities on the Hebridean island of Islay, it is matured right next to the Atlantic Ocean, where over time it takes on tangs of salt and a rather surprising sweetness at the finish. Barrier filtered only and bottled straight from the cask at natural strength, it retains the maximum Islay-peat smoke pungence and uncompromising purity.
A favourite with Whisky connoisseurs around the world and with a Royal Warrant from HRH Prince Charles, Laphroaig is the archetypal Islay malt and is very difficult to confuse with other single malts, especially those from the mainland. Laphroaig Cask Strength may appear a little cloudy when exposed to extremes of temperature and when cut with water, a sign of its unadulterated provenance. “Its all part of this Whisky’s unique proposition” says Michael Cockram, Brand Director of Laphroaig. “Laphroaig Cask Strength represents one of those rarely achieved moments when, nose, taste and visual impact work together to create something that is emphatic, full bodied and utterly unforgettable”.
