Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine (UK) Ltd (ADUK) is delighted to announce that Cockburn’s® Quinta dos Canais 2001 has been awarded the Number 10 position in the Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 100 Wines for 2004. With a score of 93 points, Quinta dos Canais 2001 was the only Port to appear in the entire list which included sparkling wines and dessert wines as well as red and white wines.
The list of ‘must-have’ wines was compiled from a selection of over 6,000 wines reviewed by leading US magazine Wine Enthusiast Magazine during 2004. Criteria for inclusion in the list include price, availability, newsworthiness and excitement as well as the actual score gained by the wine when it was tasted alongside its contemporaries earlier in the year.
Cockburn’s® Quinta dos Canais 2001 is described as “ The blackest, inkiest wine of the tasting, (it’s) incredibly rich and dense. Round and mouth filling, packed with mixed berries and chocolate, this should age magnificently” by the editors of Wine Enthusiast.
Released on to the UK market in May 2004, this Single Quinta vintage is produced at Quinta dos Canais, the ‘jewel in the Cockburn’s crown, based in the heart of the Douro Superior. The property, which has undergone 15 years of restoration and renovation, has played a crucial role in the unique style of the company’s Vintage Ports over the past seventy years, and will continue to do so following the success of the current replantation programme. Based on the northern riverbank in the Douro Superior, Canais offers spectacular views from its south facing slopes. The land is extremely steep and stony, making viticulture difficult, but its vines produce grapes of exceptional quality.
